HENRY T. LANE RINK
IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
TRADITION
A Beloved & Enduring Tradition
From the beginning, St. Sebastian’s has had a strong presence in New England hockey. The team has been a source of pride since the 1940s, when many boys first learned about the School by reading about the success of our hockey teams in The Boston Globe and other newspapers and decided to apply, whether they played hockey or were just fans of the sport. Over eight decades, St. Sebastian’s hockey teams have won Catholic League, ISL, and New England championships and have prepared many players for outstanding careers in college, professional, and Olympic ranks. A disproportionate number of alumni have distinguished themselves as college hockey captains. From year to year, decade to decade, varsity to fifth team, all Arrows hockey players share a special camaraderie, and each has their own successes and memories on and off the ice.
We plan to celebrate these memories and accomplishments in the rink with the installation of muraled walls. The murals will highlight the history of the program, including the achievements of many teams and every teammate, serving as an homage to former players and a motivation for our current and future student-athletes to continue in their pursuit of excellence.
Henry T. Lane
When Henry T. Lane ’49, P’77 passed away on April 23, 2020, St. Sebastian’s lost a beloved teacher and coach, a visionary Athletic Director, a mentor and friend to countless Arrows, and a devoted alumnus. Brimming with wit and wisdom, and blessed with an incredible memory, Henry was the quintessential storyteller and a walking encyclopedia of St. Sebastian’s history. There will never be another Henry Lane. He is—and always will be—a St. Sebastian’s legend.
Every Arrow, including the youngest generation, knows the name Henry Lane. The hockey rink will forever bear his name and the Arrows' fanbase is nicknamed “Henry’s Corner”—a nod to the spot where Henry would stand to watch every home hockey game after his retirement and a fitting tribute to one of St. Sebastian’s biggest fans.
Henry may be gone, but the man and his legacy will always be with us in spirit.
